Nearly 40 kilometers from Nha Trang, passing along Banh It Pass and turning on Road 635, you’ll be surprised by the beauty of Doc Let Beach. The beach is recognized by the International Tourism Association as one of the most beautiful and cleanest beaches in Vietnam. The gorgeous stretch of beachfront is wide and long, filled with fine, chalk-white sand and clean, turquoise water. Doc Let or Doc Lech (pronounced as ‘yop lek’) literally translates to “a hill one needs to crawl over”. The beach is easily accessible from Nha Trang and ideal for short day trips or overnight stops.
The beach extends more than 10 kilometers and is mostly undeveloped. Keep in mind that there are no public transports in the area but there are day trips or tours that are often tied with tours to Ba Ho Waterfall and Monkey Island. Doc Let Beach has the shallowest waters in all of Khanh Hoa Province. In most areas of the beach, the water is only half a meter deep even from a 100-meter distance from the shoreline. The beach is generally safe even for those who don’t know how to swim or for kids playing along. Although a greater part of Doc Let is still quiet and free from swarms of tourists, a small area has been developed into Doc Let Tourist Park where a number of cheap guesthouses and seafood stalls are lined serving crabs, clams, snails and other seafood.
Geared towards regional tourists, there are also several chairs and tables fringing the beach line instead of loungers, and cheap accommodations are in close proximity instead of classy resorts. Doc Let Tourist Park covers nearly 14 hectares and within this particular area, a few resorts have been developed under the shady eucalyptus forests by the Khanh Hoa Tourist Company. The resorts consist of bungalows with reasonable rates ranging from 150000 – 300000 VND. The park also serves a number of recreational and entertainment amenities such as a tennis court, massage rooms, karaoke, swimming pools, underwater games, boat cruises, surfing, balloon-flying and beach volleyball.
There are still greater parts of Doc Let Beach that are primitive and clear of tourists, having endless sand dunes that separate the coast from the land. In order to reach the beach, you still have to pass the sand dunes that are several meters high. This could be the reason why the locals called the beach Doc Let or “dragging hill”.
After enjoying the waves and playing in the clean waters, tourists can relax under the shade of palm trees lined along the beach and absorb the relaxing sound of the waves hitting the shore. Another fun activity is to charter a boat, which costs 50000 VND, and cruise the Van Phong Bay and explore the daily local life of the offshore fishermen. Staying overnight in Doc Let Beach on a star-studded night is a pleasant experience. During night, the surface of the sea twinkles with the lights from fishing boats. When getting to Doc Let, you can use a rented motorbike which costs 60000 – 70000 VND or car rental for 450 000VND.
