Laem Set Village is a quaint, sleepy village on the southern part of Ko Samui. This quiet village is not as crowded with tourists as the other villages on the island. It has a number of good resorts, a lot of which cater to the upscale market. Many people like to go here to see beaches that are pretty much still unspoilt by development. People also go here to visit Samui Butterfly Garden, which can be found in Na Tian.
A short 20 minutes drive away from Lamai and 40 minutes from Chaweng, the butterfly garden is one of the attractions of Laem Set. Situated on a hilltop in Na Tian, the entire compound, which is bordered by a net enclosure, houses different species of butterflies. When you visit the butterfly garden, you will be amazed at the explosion of colors that will greet you – from small butterflies to bigger ones, each with its own unique appearance.
Samui Butterfly Garden is a haven for those who love taking photographs. If you are planning to visit here, be sure to bring your camera along, as there are lots of beautiful shots waiting to be taken. Bringing a videocam with you is also not a bad idea, especially if you lack the patience to wait for the perfect shot but want to capture the butterflies in action nonetheless.
There are other things to see here besides the butterflies. An insect museum lies farther uphill. It showcases a collection of rare insects from various places. You will find a collection of preserved beetles, butterflies, spiders, crickets, and tarantulas on display. You will also see butterflies from other countries like Indonesia and Malaysia.
Because the museum stands at the top of the hill, it would take a bit of effort to climb especially on a hot day. Fortunately, the little store near the museum sells ice cream, and you can cool off with it after walking all the way up. The store is a bit overpriced, though, so expect to pay more than the usual. Still, don’t forget to bring water with you when you take a trip to butterfly garden, especially if you don’t take too well on hot weather.
Aside from these, there’s also a bee house in Samui Butterfly Garden. The bee house is actually a house designed in the usual Thai architecture. When you go inside, you get to observe how bees work and move about in their colonies. It’s another amazing sight to see.
One of the things that make a trip to the butterfly garden truly special is that from up there, your eyes can take in a breathtaking view overlooking Laem Set beach. Samui Butterfly Garden is itself a lovely place, with all the lush greens in and around it. Going there is certainly worth the trip. For a small fee, you get to see an array of different kinds of butterflies, observe bees in their colonies, and set eyes on a wide collection of preserved insects and arachnids.
