The culture and festivals in Jakarta are influenced by different ethnic groups. Being the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta has attracted settlers from neighboring areas over the years, giving rise to a set of customs, practices, and cuisine unique to the place. There are several ethnic groups that make up the population in the city.
The Betawi were settlers that used to live around old Jakarta during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The Betawi themselves are made up of people from various ethnic groups from nearby Southeast Asian countries who went to Jakarta to look for sources of income. Some members of the Betawi were from other parts of Indonesia.
