Internationally well-known for its trance parties, Anjuna Beach lies below the red cliffs and is popular as a party beach in Goa. It is situated to the south of Anjuna Village, north of Goa, with a land area of about 13 square kilometers. If you fancy a serene and quiet beach, Anjuna is not your place, as it is very crowded with walls of tourists, water sports and surprisingly, stray cows too.
Just 18 kilometers away from the state capital Panaji, you can appreciate the breeze-grasping palms, golden sand and the odd-looking rock formations lining the cove. In terms of accommodations, one can easily find guesthouses and beach hotels across Anjuna Beach. While there are hardly any large hotels in Anjuna, budget guesthouses and hotels are available here, including Flushing Meadows Country Resort, Hotel Marinha Dourada, Hotel Lagoa Azul and Hotel Laguna Anjuna. Most homes are designed as ground-storey buildings and let out rooms for tourists who opt to stay in Anjuna for a while. Just look for the sign ‘To Let’ outside the house.
Anjuna Beach would not be one of the most exciting beaches in Goa without its rave parties, Wednesday flea market, tattoo centers, yoga center and wide range of exotic bars and restaurants. Rave parties are held every full moon in various hot spots in Anjuna. While swimming is not recommended here due to strong undercurrents, you may try underwater diving. Diving equipment rentals are available at the beachfront, and you may see marine creatures such as shark fish, turtles, barracudas and lionfish. Nevertheless, be careful.
Your Anjuna trip will not be complete without shopping in Anjuna Flea Market every Wednesday. Use your haggling skills when buying here for the best deal, with items ranging from accessories, hats, bikes to souvenir items. Take note that this flea market attracts a large mass of tourists across North Goa, leading to heavy traffic jams in the southern roads of Anjuna. Even under the palm trees, colorful goods are on display while some locals sell local delicacies such as falafel, hash cake and succulent fruit juices. Tattooing, body piercing, haircut and tarot reading services can be tried here.
Anjuna Beach has some of the most famous nightclubs in Goa. Paradiso Disco, a famous chill-out place in Anjuna, can be found on top of the cliff and even though they charge a hefty entrance fee, you can see plenty of guests inside every evening. Oftentimes, the security service blocks entry of locals. Inside, you can find a number of dancing platforms and drinking bars facing the coast.
Although Anjuna is famous for its rave parties, the local government is strictly monitoring this area as the beach is notorious for trading illegal drugs and other illicit substances. Many foreigners are checked by the Anti-Narcotics police so always keep watch of your belongings.
You will not have any difficulty getting to Anjuna Beach. Taxis are available for a price, although it’s expensive. You can take the bus from Mapusa or Arpora to Anjuna but you’ll have to walk since the bus will not reach all the way to the beach. Perhaps the best way is to catch a boat from Baga beach going to Anjuna.
